Clinical Tip No. 4: Ciprofloxacin for UTIs: Still a Good Idea?
Tip No. 4
๐ THE PROBLEM:
In most countries, ciprofloxacin is no longer a good option for empirical treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs).
๐ THE BACKGROUND:
Escherichia coli (E. coli), the most common cause of UTIs, has developed high resistance to fluoroquinolones, with rates exceeding 20% in many regions.
โ
WHAT TO DO:
If you're considering empirical ciprofloxacin, check local resistance data for E. coli to fluoroquinolones. You can find this information from the CDC, ECDC, or your local epidemiological service.
If thatโs not available, take a look at ResistanceMap. Itโs free, easy to use and quite accurate.
๐ก Fluoroquinolones can still be very effective for targeted treatment of prostatitis or pyelonephritis, once you already know the susceptibility.
